Magpie 007 • China Railway Scrapbook

During five years of living in China, I came to love travelling across the country on high speed trains. Sleeper car journeys weren't to my taste but a seated journey of a few hours was delightful, not least because I could leaf through the free magazines provided for the passengers, admiring many pictures by talented Chinese photographers. On every journey I came across photographs so good that I simply tore the pages out of the magazines to keep for myself.

Over ten years later, many of these pages are still stuck to the walls of my bedroom. I cannot express the joy that these images bring me. If 'seated excitement' could be a meaningful phrase, it would be applicable here. To look at these photos, each packed with stories and exuberance, makes something inside me dance and exercise itself without any need to leave my chair or my bed.
